Problem
When opening a Microsoft Office document that is stored on a DRACOON drive/volume mounted with DRACOON for Windows/Mac and has a long pathname, an error message appears saying that the file cannot be opened.
Cause
Microsoft Office applications cannot open documents whose file path is longer than 255 characters. For Microsoft Excel files, the limit even was as low as 218 characters until the April 2020 release of Excel from Office 365.
The problem is not a limitation of DRACOON, other cloud desktop integrations are also affected—the cause lies solely with Microsoft Office and is due to compatibility reasons with Office add-ins and macros. The problem still occurs in the latest versions of Office for Windows/Mac.
Solution strategies/workaround
To work around the problem, you can try shortening the file path in the following way so that it does not exceed 218 characters (for Excel files when using older Excel versions than the April 2020 release of Office 365) or 255 characters (for Word and PowerPoint files):
- Use the shortest possible file names for Office documents.
- Use the shortest possible names for data rooms and folders in DRACOON.
- Only for DRACOON for Mac: Mount the DRACOON volume further up in the Mac directory structure as this will shorten the path. Click the DRACOON icon in the status menu of the menu bar, click Preferences, and then click Connection:
Under Mount Location, you can specify a mount point for the DRACOON volume further up in the directory structure, such as/Users/your username/DRACOON.
