What are S3 object tags?
S3 object tags (short: s3 tags) are keywords that can be assigned to files in an S3 storage (preferably NetApp StorageGRID, but also Amazon S3, for example). S3 tags can be used to implement flexible storage policies.
- For example, files from particularly sensitive data rooms can be automatically stored in a data center of the highest security level or at a certain location on earth.
- Another possibility is the georedundant storage of data. The client is always offered the closest storage node for the download and upload of objects.
- Archiving guidelines can also be applied using S3 tags. Thus, for example, S3 objects can only be deleted after 10 years and are archived audit-proof until the deadline expires.
The use of S3 tags thus gives you enormous flexibility for data storage in the S3 backend.
It's very easy to use S3 tags in DRACOON:
- Enable the use of S3 tags in DRACOON.
- Specify the desired S3 tags in DRACOON.
- Room administrators assign S3 tags to their data rooms as needed.
Enable S3 tags in DRACOON
- Requirements for the usage of S3 tags:
- Before you can use S3 tags in DRACOON, S3 storage must be connected to DRACOON (under Settings > Storage).
- The connected S3 storage must support S3 tags. We recommend NetApp StorageGRID as an S3 storage solution if you want to use S3 tags.
- It is recommended to first define, in your S3 storage solution, the desired storage policies that later should respond to specified S3 tags from DRACOON.
- You must own the Configuration Manager role in DRACOON to enable and specify S3 tags in DRACOON.
How to enable S3 tags in DRACOON:
- In the DRACOON Web App, in the left side pane, click Settings, and then click Storage.
- To the right of S3 Storage, click the Edit button.
If the Edit button is not visible, no S3 storage is connected to your DRACOON yet. Click the Configure button to connect your S3 storage to DRACOON.
- Turn on the S3 Tags switch.
- Click the Save button.
S3 tags are now enabled in DRACOON. You can now specify the desired S3 tags in the next step.
Specify S3 tags
How to globally specify S3 tags in DRACOON:
- In the DRACOON Web App, in the left side pane, click Settings, and then click Storage.
- Click the S3 Tags tab.
- Click the Add button on the far right. A dialog box appears in which you can specify a new S3 tag.
- In the Name field, enter a category for the S3 tag, such as Storage region.
- In the Value field, enter the desired value for the S3 tag, for example, Europe or Asia.
- If you want the new S3 tag to be assigned to all files in all data rooms, activate the Mandatory switch. This S3 tag is then assigned to all existing files and will be assigned to all future files in DRACOON, without the room administrator of a room being able to prevent this.
- Click the Add button to create the S3 tag.
- If you want to add more S3 tags, repeat steps 3-7 above.
- If you want to delete an S3 tag you created (for example, because you made a mistake while entering it or you no longer need it), click the X to the right of the S3 tag.
Use S3 tags in data rooms
- All S3 tags defined in DRACOON that are marked as mandatory (see above) are automatically assigned to all data rooms and thus to all files in DRACOON.
- S3 tags that are not marked as mandatory can be assigned to individual data rooms. All files in these rooms will then be tagged with these S3 tags.
How to assign S3 tags to a data room:
You must be room administrator of the data room to which you want to assign S3 tags.
- In the DRACOON Web App, open the data room you want to assign S3 tags to.
- To the right of the path navigation bar, click the button, and then click Settings on the menu.
- Click the S3 Tags tab.
- Click each S3 tag that you want to assign to the data room. Assigned S3 tags get a checkmark. By clicking an already assigned S3 tag you can remove it from the data room, if necessary.
S3 tags that have been defined as mandatory are automatically assigned and cannot be deactivated; they are displayed with a lighter background than manually assigned S3 tags ("Bordeaux" and "London" in the example below). - The activated S3 tags are assigned to the data room and thus to all existing and future files in the room. If you have deactivated S3 tags that were previously activated, they will be removed from all existing files in the room.
