About this release
Version 6.3 of the DRACOON Web App was deployed on the DRACOON cloud on June 1, 2021 and replaces the previous version 6.2
New feature
NewDownloading very large files from encrypted data rooms (in Chrome and Edge)
Starting with version 6.3, files larger than 1 GB can now be downloaded from encrypted data rooms in the DRACOON Web App using the Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers.
In the Firefox and Safari browsers, due to existing limitations of these browsers, only files from encrypted data rooms up to a maximum size of 1 GB can be downloaded with the DRACOON Web App (as before). However, the DRACOON Web App now displays a corresponding note when a download of a larger encrypted file is attempted with Firefox or Safari. It points out the possibility to download the file via the browsers Chrome or Edge or DRACOON for Windows/Mac.
Until now, very large files (with a size of 1.5 GB, for example) could generally not be downloaded from encrypted data rooms in the DRACOON Web App—until now, such large encrypted files had to be downloaded with DRACOON for Windows/Mac in case of need. The reason for this previous restriction was that the entire file had to be held in memory during the download process to be encrypted and saved on the device at the end. Depending on the browser and the size of the download, it could happen that the browser process had no more free RAM and then stopped responding, which prevented the download from being completed successfully.
In version 6.3, the DRACOON Web App now uses a different method under the Chrome and Edge browsers, which is currently only available under these browsers: Here, the hard disk is used as a buffer, which means that the file to be downloaded no longer has to be kept completely in memory during the download. This new method now allows that even files several GB in size can be downloaded from encrypted data rooms without any problems, while also freeing up RAM at the same time.
Unfortunately, the ability to use the hard drive as a download cache when downloading (encrypted) file segments is not yet supported by Firefox and Safari, so this download option is currently only available under Chrome and Edge.
Downloads from non-encrypted data rooms and uploads to encrypted data rooms are not affected by this issue.
